Historical Sketch
The St. Louis Gender Foundation is the longest-running transgender organization in the St. Louis area. Tracing its origins to the early 1970s, the organization has been known by several names through the years, including Paradise West and the Gateway Femmes. It adopted its current name in September 1990. For decades, the St. Louis Gender Foundation has been a hub of community building and source of support for transgender people, particularly transgender women, in the St. Louis area and beyond.
