Scope and Content

The collection consists of correspondence of Albert George Fischer and Georgena Hendy during their courtship, engagement, and marriage from 1890 to 1895. The letters dated February 9 to September 22, 1890, were written during the couple’s courtship and engagement and describe Georgena’s life in St Louis and Albert’s life in Springfield, Missouri. The letters dated June 1-24, 1892, were written from Albert to Georgena while Georgena and their daughter Leona were staying with his sister Carrie at 2621 Dickinson Street in St. Louis while he set up his cigar business in Springfield. These letters consist of Albert talking about his homesickness for Georgena and their baby as well as his life in Springfield. The letters dated October 2-14, 1893, were written while Georgena was visiting her family in St. Louis with their two daughters Leona and Virginia. Georgena writes about the children and her time with her family. Albert’s letters mention his business and personal life in Springfield. The letters dated September 11 to October 16, 1894, are from Albert Fischer to Georgena about his business sales while he is in Springfield and traveling, as well as his homesickness for his family. The letter dated October 1, 1895, is from Albert to his wife on their fifth marriage anniversary.

Biographical Sketch

Albert George Fischer was born in 1864 in St. Louis, Missouri, to Frederick Fischer and Henrietta Multhaupt. On October 1, 1890, he married Georgena Hendy, who was born in 1866 in Kentucky. Her parents were Samuel Hendy and Catherine Hart. When Georgena was a child, her family moved to Missouri, first to Springfield and then to St. Louis. Albert and Georgena Fischer lived in St. Louis for two years after their marriage, and their daughter Leona was born there in 1891. In June 1892, Fischer set up his own business in Springfield, Missouri, known as Fischer and Ferneau, cigar manufacturers. Albert and Georgena had two other daughters: Virginia (born in 1893 in Springfield) and Gertrude (born in 1895 in Springfield). In 1910, the Fischer family moved to Duncan, Oklahoma. Georgena Hendy Fischer died February 3, 1927, in Duncan, Oklahoma, due to complications of the flu. Albert Fischer died January 17, 1943, in Oklahoma City.
