Scope and Contents

The collection consists of programs and brochures for the Annual National Ragtime Festival and various other ragtime music events in St. Louis. Items date from 1982 to 1992 and are arranged chronologically. There are tickets and several programs for the Annual National Ragtime Festival at the Goldenrod Showboat. The other programs are for various ragtime performances in the area: Sugar Babies (MUNY Winter Series at The Fox Theatre), the Ragtime Heritage Festival at Union Station, and the CASA in Concert series (The St. Louis Conservatory and Schools for the Arts). Historical Sketch

Ragtime has been a staple in the St. Louis music lexicon since the 1890s. In 1965, the Goldenrod Showboat became home to the annual Riverfront Ragtime Festival, which later became known as the National Ragtime Festival. The festival began through the efforts of the boat’s owner, Frank Pierson, and a ragtime musician and teacher, Trebor Tichenor. The John Auble family continued the festival when they purchased the Goldenrod Showboat.
