Biographical / Historical

Nellie Bates Bishop was born in Redhill, Surrey, England, on February 11, 1874, to parents Richard Thomas Bishop and Jane Bates Bishop. She was the oldest girl of eleven children. The Bishop family immigrated to the United States in 1876. Nellie started work at Conrad's in 1902, and in 1910 she worked as a bookkeeper. She died November 28, 1958, in St. Louis, Missouri.

Donor Information

The bulk of the collection was donated by Jane Dallas in 2004. The diary of Nellie Bishop dated January 1892–April 1893 was donated by Martha Bishop (courtesy of Jeanne Blythe) in September 1965.
