Francis Joseph Schulte Collection

 Collection
Identifier: A3262

Scope and Contents

The collection is comprised of programs, newspaper clippings, and photographs relating to Joe Schulte and his theater work in St. Louis. The items are arranged alphabetically and date from 1973 to 1989 with the following gaps: 1975, 1977-1979 and 1981-1987. The collection focuses mostly on Schulte’s acting and directing outside his job at St. Louis University High School. The exception is the 1976 production of Guys and Dolls by the St. Louis University Department of Theatre Arts, which Schulte directed. A newspaper clipping reveals that Schulte directed a summer production of Oklahoma by The Playmakers, a group of college and high school students (f.5). Another clipping explains Schulte’s role as production and technical adviser for the third annual Christmas Carols Festival. The festival was sponsored by the St. Louis Globe-Democrat and the St. Louis Christmas Carols Association (f.3). In 1974, Schulte acted in two productions at The Barn Dinner Theatre, 6 Rms Riv U and What Did We Do Wrong?, which were photographed by local photographer Michael D. Eastman. Dwayne Hickman, TV’s Dobie Gillis, starred in 6 Rms Riv U (f.1-2). There are programs, newspaper reviews, and photographs for both productions. Schulte directed the remainder of the productions represented in the collection: Nunsense and River Rambles at the Goldenrod Showboat and Tunnel of Love at the Good Times Dinner Theatre.

Biographical Sketch

Francis Joseph (Joe) Schulte was born in 1937 to Francis Joseph Schulte and Adele Gertrude (Gore) Schulte. He married Judith E. Maret (1940-1997), and the couple had four children: Joe Schulte, Michael Schulte, Kate Schulte Rob, and Danny Schulte. Joe Schulte died July 11, 2016. Joe Schulte graduated from St. Louis University High School in 1954. He returned to his alma mater where he taught mathematics and theater until his retirement. Some of Schulte’s students who pursued careers in the performing arts included George Hickenlooper (director), Jim Byrnes (actor), Brian Hohlfeld (screenwriter), and James Gunn (writer/director). Schulte also worked outside his high school position, directing performances by The Playmakers, comprised of high school and college students, during summer productions. Additionally, Schulte performed and directed in local dinner theaters and worked at The Muny as assistant stage manager for several seasons. Schulte’s dedication to the theater arts was recognized with several awards: Top Educator by the Arts and Education Council of Greater St. Louis (2006), Kevin Kline Lifetime Achievement Award (2012), and The Backer Award for St. Louis University High School alumni (2010). In 2005, St. Louis University High School (SLUH) named its theater in his honor, the Joseph Schulte Theatre. In April 2016, members of SLUH’s archive committee conducted a video interview with Joe Schulte (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=amvA3AdGb7M).
