Historical Sketch

The St. Louis Queer+ Support Helpline was established in 2019 and uses the acronym SQSH, pronounced “squish.” It is a community-based, grassroots nonprofit focused on providing spaces and support for queer St. Louisans to lead fulfilling lives. Its trained helpline volunteers provide free, confidential, and identity-affirming emotional support; short-term peer counseling; and resource referrals for LGBTQIA+ individuals, friends, family members, allies, and service providers. Initial funding came from a $5,000 Civic Scholars grant from Gephardt Institute for Civic and Community Engagement (at Washington University). Other funding sources include donations, fundraiser proceeds, and a grant from the St. Louis Area Violence Prevention Commission.
