Historical Sketch

PROMO is a nonprofit lobbying organization with headquarters in St. Louis. It traces its history to 1986 with the formation of PACE (People Aligned for Change and Equality) in response to the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Bowers v. Hardwick. PACE soon changed its name to PREP (Privacy Rights Education Project). In June 2001, PREP changed its name to PROMO (Personal Rights of Missourians) to dedicate its time, mission, and resources more specifically to LGBT equality. It advocates for the LGBTQ+ community through legislative action, grassroots organizing, and community education. On February 25, 2006, the fundamentalist Protestant organization Focus on the Family held its “Love Won Out” conference at the First Evangelical Free Church in Manchester, Missouri. The conference message was that homosexuality might be cured. PROMO reportedly organized a peaceful demonstration, which was attended by people across several demographic groups. The protest used “Love Needs No Cure” as its slogan.
