Historical Sketch

Open from about 1980 to 1988, the Zebra Lounge at 3230 Olive Street in Midtown St. Louis was the preeminent African American LGBTQ+ nightspot in St. Louis. The bar offered dancing, drag shows, and other performances. It was also a center of the house music scene in St. Louis. The Zebra Lounge was a crucial site of community building for a generation of young, queer Black St. Louisans. The Zebra Lounge Facebook group provides more information about the nightclub: "It was owned by Richard Prewitt who previously owned The Onyx Room located at Olive and Grand earlier. The Zebra was managed by Edith (Ms. Edie) Griffith and Floyd Dixon along with several others. It provided a place for black gays to socialize and feel welcome."
