Joseph and Mary Errante Papers

 Collection
Identifier: A3219

Scope and Contents

The papers include certificates of citizenship, newspaper clippings, and citizenship class notes relating to the naturalization of Joseph and Mary Errante. The items date from 1938 to 1940 and are arranged chronologically. The certificates of citizenship for Mary and Joseph each have a photo affixed above the seal of the U.S. District Court. Mary’s certificate is dated September 21, 1939; Joseph’s is dated September 26, 1940. Mary attended classes in citizenship conducted by the Americanization Department of the Board of Religious Organizations. She used a Shirley Temple Composition Book to record lessons completed from March 1938 to June 1939, with a summer break from June through September 1938. Each page has the date and the number of the lesson. Several pages start with a few sentences pertaining to Mary's activities on that day and notes about missing class for her children’s school activities. She then writes about various significant events or people in American history. Upon completion of her citizenship classes in June 1939, a St. Louis area chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution presented American flags to Mary Errante and five other ladies: Mrs. Theresa Colombo, Mrs. Clementine Bertani, Mrs. Virginia Mancuso, Mrs. Jennie Solcia, and Mrs. Rose Garavaglia. Clippings from three St. Louis newspapers show photographs that accompanied news of the presentation. The St. Louis Globe-Democrat included the ladies’ home addresses.
