The earliest item in the collection is a survey completed for Mr. Nicholas Ast by the city engineer of Carondelet for Lots 4 and 5 in Block 29, focusing primarily on the years it was owned by four generations of the Zeller/Wohlschlaeger family. Documents concerning ownership of the lots and dwelling include a deed from Nicholas Ast to Wilhelmina Schumacher (April 7, 1883); a deed from Wilhelmina Schumacher to Michael Zeller (February 7, 1890); quit claim deeds from both Elizabeth Zeller and Elizabeth Wohlschlaeger to Michael A. and Theresa Wohlschlaeger (May 21, 1926); a deed of trust between Michael A. and Theresa Wohlschlaeger, Amedee A. Wohschlaeger to make changes to buildings on the property; and a general sale contract from Ferdinand and Theresa Wesloh to James W. and Mary Casey (April 1978). Photocopies of three photographs include a four-generation photo of the Zeller-Wohlschlaeger family dated circa 1905, a street view of the home, and Amadee Wohlschlaeger standing in front of the home. The final item is a genealogy chart for Ferdinand and Theresa (Zettwoch) Wesloh.

Historical Sketch

The home at 7820 Minnesota Avenue in the Carondelet neighborhood of St. Louis is Lot 4 of City Block 3130. It was originally known as Lots 4 and 5 in Block 29 of Peter R. Kenrick’s subdivision in the City of Carondelet. Four generations of one family owned the home over a period of 88 years. Peter R. Kenrick sold the lots to Nicholas Ast in 1867. In 1883, Ast sold the property to Wilhelmina Schumacher. Schumacher sold Lots 4 and 5 to Michael Zeller in 1890. Michael Zeller and his wife, Elizabeth Schneider Zeller (1843-1939), had a daughter also named Elizabeth (1858-1928). She married John Wohlschlaeger (1855-1883). In 1926, Elizabeth Zeller sold the home at 7820 Minnesota to her grandson and his wife, Michael A. (1877-1945) and Theresa Zettwoch (1879-1943) Wohlschlaeger. Michael and Theresa Wohlschlaeger had eight children. One of their sons, Amadee Wohlschlaeger, was a long-time artist for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, illustrating the Weatherbird and sports news. Their youngest daughter Theresa (1916-2013) married Ferdinand Joseph Wesloh, Sr. (1911-1983) in 1937. In 1944, the Weslohs purchased the 7820 Minnesota home from Theresa’s parents. In 1978, the Weslohs sold the home to James and Mary Casey.
