Historical Sketch

In 1955, the St. Louis Outboard Club was founded as the only African American recreational boating club of its kind in the St. Lous region. The following year, the club garnered three more members, including George H. Carper, a St. Louis businessman who served with the Tuskegee Airmen. Arthur Kennedy, Jr.; William R. Allen; and Edward S. Livingston, Jr. are considered charter members. By 1965, the club had grown, incorporated, and changed its name to the St. Louis Gateway Boat Club. The club has four purposes: to promote safe boating, to provide wholesome recreation for family and friends, to encourage boating enthusiasm, and to promote civic understanding and goodwill in the community.
