Mem "Ish Kabibble" Bogue, Armand Buissaret (I Sax), Harry Breeding (II alto) "Sully" Mason, Lloyd Swon, "Muddy" Berry, Dick Barrie, and Kay Kyser. Biographical and Historical Sketches

Frances E. “Betty” Holzhauer was born in 1917, one of three daughters of Carl H. Klemm, who managed his father's dry goods store in Bloomington, Illinois. During her high school years, Betty dated Jim Riner, even after his family moved to St. Louis. One evening, Betty's parents drove her to Springfield, Illinois, where Jim met her and drove her to St. Louis so they could see the Kay Kyser Band perform at the Meadow Brook Country Club in Overland, Missouri. After graduating from the University of North Caroline, Kay Kyser started touring with his college band, with whom he acted as bandleader. In 1934, the Kay Kyser Orchestra took a regular engagement at The Blackhawk Club in Chicago. Soon, the band became one of the most popular groups of the swing era, appearing on radio, in movies, entertaining troops during World War II, and recording many hit records. The history of the Meadow Brook Country Club in Overland, Missouri, is unclear. It operated as the Midland Valley Country Club until its foreclosure in the spring of 1932. In January 1933, the Meadow Brook Country Club succeeded the Meadow Brook Golf Club and Tavern. By August, however, it had closed its doors, citing increased summer entertainment competition. The current Meadowbrook Country Club website explains (https://www.meabrk.org): "Meadowbrook’s history dates back to 1943, when The Meadow Brook Club was a public facility owned by the Berberich family and located in Overland, Missouri. Situated at Lackland and Midland Avenues, the Club had been strategically situated at the end of the streetcar run from the city of St. Louis. The facilities included a fine golf course, swimming pool and night club, replete with dining facilities. With World War II in full swing, business was understandably off at most clubs." "A group of forward-thinking Washington Avenue manufacturers and Chestnut Street real estate moguls pledged to purchase the Club. In 1944, the group of “founders” expanded, solidifying the purchase of the property for the hefty sum of $175,000." The website goes on to explain that a fire destroyed the clubhouse on December 12, 1957. Management decided to purchase 320 acres in Ballwin with the insurance settlement and the sale of the Overland property. The new country club opened at Kehrs Mill Road and Clayton Road on March 27, 1960.
