Historical Sketch
The League of Women Voters of Metro St. Louis (LWVSTL) was founded on November 13, 1919. The national league was officially founded in 1920, just six months before the Nineteenth Amendment was ratified and women won the vote. Formed by the suffragists of the National American Woman Suffrage Association, the League began as a political experiment designed to help twenty million women carry out their new responsibilities as voters. Today it is a nonpartisan political organization that encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy. During the COVID-19 pandemic on August 29, 2021, the LWVSTL hosted a Virtual Theater Party Fundraiser, which included a prerecorded performance of the play Tea for Three: Lady Bird, Pat & Betty followed by a live Q&A session via Zoom. The play was a one-woman show starring Elaine Bromka, who also co-wrote the play with Eric H. Weinberger. Bromka was an Emmy-award-winning actress who portrayed Lady Bird Johnson in 1968, Pat Nixon in 1974, and Betty Ford in 1976, at the end of their stays in the White House.
