Biographical / Historical
In 1865 English-born William Henry Woodward (1834-1904), then foreman at St. Louis’ Daily Missouri Republican, purchased a small commercial print shop at Third and Pine Streets and three years later invited the Republican's James Tiernan (1838-1886) to join him as partner. Subsequent success prompted a move to larger quarters at Second and Locust Streets in 1872. By 1885 this shop was the largest of ninety printing plants in the city. The firm specialized in lithography while offering print and design services that ranged from map engraving to binding to large-scale posters and show work. After the turn of the century, the firm’s litany of services included printing of all kinds. In 1959 the Universal Match Corporation purchased Woodward & Tiernan and joined it with the Simmon-Sisler Printing Company. Universal Match, which had purchased nine companies in the previous year, selected Woodward & Tiernan for expansion specifically for its “modern plant” at 1519 Tower Grove Avenue. Harry Patrick Walter was born in St. Louis on December 12, 1886, the son of Henry Walter and Mary Brady Boyle. Harry's father died some time before 1900. When Harry was twelve, he started work at Woodward & Tiernan Printing Company as a printer's helper. Harry continued to work for the company for the rest of his life, ultimately becoming a salesman. He received this stock certificate in Woodward & Tiernan in 1937, perhaps because he had worked for the company for forty years. Harry died in 1969.
