Historical Sketch

Aloe Memorial Plaza was named in honor of Louis P. Aloe (1867-1929), a local businessman and president of the St. Louis Board of Aldermen. His wife Edith Rosenblatt Aloe (1875-1956) dedicated the plaza to his memory upon its opening in 1940. The plaza is located in front of Union Station, between Market, Chestnut, 18th, and 20th Streets. The Milles Fountain, titled “The Meeting of the Waters,” was designed by Swedish sculptor Carl Milles (1875-1955). It represents the meeting of the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers, and was considered controversial at opening because of the nudity of the male and female figures representing the rivers.
