Biographical Sketch

Frances “Queenie” Fendler was born February 26, 1901. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Washington University in 1922. In that same year she married Herbert Schiele (1899-1984). In the 1940s, along with Rabbi Ferdinand Isserman and other friends from Temple Israel, Queenie Schiele founded the Nursery Foundation of St. Louis. It was the first interracial day nursery in the region and became a full-service child development center before its closing in 2013. For many years, the Greater St. Louis Book Fair funded the school. In 1950, the Urban League of St. Louis awarded Mrs. Schiele for her work in improving living conditions for minorities. She died on July 9, 2003.
