Sharon Love St. Louis Gender Foundation Collection

 Collection
Identifier: A3151

Scope and Contents

The collection contains newsletter articles concerning the history of the St. Louis Gender Foundation (StLGF); a list of officers and duties; and lists of past practices and policies, events, and issues to address. The documents date from approximately 2000 to 2005 and are arranged chronologically.

The newsletter excerpts, with background on the group’s beginnings, highlight Sherry Enteman’s role in founding StLGF. There are variant spellings of Sherry’s name in these newsletters and on the StLGF website: Sherry Etemann, Sherry Entemann, and Sheri Enteman.

The lists of officers and duties is the only dated document in the collection, March 2005. It precedes a four-page document addressed to the StLGF board of directors which includes general information such as meeting frequency and various organizations with which it works. It also lists some past practices concerning finances, a member survey, a vendor list that supports the community, and a list of past events held at meetings. The final page lists four issues that require the board’s attentio,n including approval of the updated bylaws.

Historical Sketch

Sharon Love was a longtime member and former president of the St. Louis Gender Foundation, the earliest and longest-running organization in the region focused on the needs of gender-nonconforming and transgender adults. In the late 1960s or early 1970s, Sherry Enteman invited transgender friends to her home. The numbers grew so great that a larger meeting space was needed, and eventually the group formally organized.

The St. Louis Gender Foundation (StLGF) is a not-for-profit and nonsexual support and educational resource for gender nonconforming adults. Significant others, caring professionals, and all who support freedom of gender expression are welcome. The StLGF is proud of its long tradition as an open organization that does not discriminate. Its goal is to provide a nurturing environment conducive to individual growth and development. The StLGF is a vehicle for networking among members regarding supportive health care, legal professionals, and businesses in the St. Louis area. There are rules of conduct and photography guidelines to which members are expected to adhere.
