Kirkwood High School Class of 1949 Collection
Scope and Contents
The collection includes one program and three directories from the Kirkwood High School class of 1949 dated 1949, 1974, and 1989. The items are arranged chronologically.
The earliest program is from the 1949 senior class production of Meet Me in St. Louis. The remaining items are directories from class reunions; the 25th reunion in 1974 and the 40th reunion in 1989. The directory from 1974 provides the following information for each class member: marital status and married name for the female class members, addresses, number of children, occupation or names of employers, and any other information classmates wished to share. There are two copies of the 40th reunion directory which lists the class members, names of spouses, addresses, and notes deceased classmates.

Biographical Sketch
The Kirkwood School District was founded in 1865 in Kirkwood, St. Louis County, Missouri. A temporary building opened in the fall of 1866; high school and elementary students attended school together before the district built more school buildings in 1869, one for white students and one for African American students. In 1896, Kirkwood offered the first four-year high school program in St. Louis County; 10 students were members of the first graduating class in the spring of 1897. In 1922, a new four-year high school was built on Kirkwood Road and in 1955, Kirkwood High School opened on a 47-acre campus with seven integrated buildings.
