Biographical Sketch
Edward W. Burger, Jr. was born on April 12, 1922, in St. Louis to Gladys S. (1902-1981) and Edward A. Burger (1899-1954). He enlisted in the U.S. Army on December 24, 1942, at Jefferson Barracks. Burger was assigned to the 70th Tank Battalion where he attained the rank of corporal. The 70th Tank Battalion landed at Utah Beach during Operation Overlord (D-Day) in June 1944. Burger was reported as missing in action in the St. Louis Globe-Democrat on July 26, 1944. His status was changed to killed in action on the date of June 13, 1944. Burger was awarded the Purple Heart posthumously in March 1945.
