Catherine Meagher Letter

 Collection
Identifier: A3120

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of one letter written to Catherine Meagher by an unknown niece named Ann. The letter is undated but the envelope is postmarked from Alton, Illinois, on October 3, 1927, just days after a tornado swept through the City of St. Louis on September 29th. Ann enclosed a newspaper page from the St. Louis Globe-Democrat dated October 1st.

Ann described the damage that she saw when she visited St. Louis on the day on which she wrote the letter. She mentioned the damage to Mrs. Murphy’s home on Lindell along with damage at 4228 Delmar and at St. Ann’s Church. Ann saw the Red Cross, American Legion, and Boy Scouts clearing the rubble. She told her aunt that she had “never seen anything present such a sad appearance as the City did today.”
