Historical Sketch

The St. Louis Chamber of Commerce planned the Greater St. Louis Independence Celebration and Exposition of Industrial Progress to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and to display St. Louis products to thousands of visitors. The event was held in Forest Park, across from the Forest Park Highlands, from September 4-19, 1926. There were many entertainment events tied to the exposition: parades, firework displays, children’s shows, a water circus, and numerous musical acts. Missouri Governor Sam Baker and his staff attended Missouri Day at the expo. Various committees worked for the success of the exposition including an Amusements Committee and a Women’s Exposition Committee which organized events and a competition for women’s organizations.
