John Bottchen, Jr., St. Louis Cardinals Baseball Scorecards

 Collection
Identifier: A3097

Scope and Contents

The collection is comprised primarily of St. Louis Cardinals baseball scorecards with a few accompanying ticket stubs collected by John Bottchen, Jr., from 1983 to 2017. The bulk of the score cards date from 1999 to 2017 and there are none for the years 1984-1985, 1987-1988, and 1990-1995. The 92 scorecards and tickets are arranged chronologically with two minor league cards appearing at the end of the collection.

During the 1998 season, St. Louis Cardinal Mark McGwire, Chicago Cub Sammy Sosa, and Seattle Mariner Ken Griffey, Jr., chased Roger Maris’ single season home run record. There are six scorecards for the 1998 season. Only the June 30th scorecard records a home run for McGwire. He broke the record, hitting his 62nd home run, on September 8th against the Cubs and the collection contains a blank scorecard for that game.

Bottchen attended two Cardinals away games: in San Diego (15 August 2006) and in Kansas City (ca. 23 May 2015). He also went to minor league games in Memphis and Birmingham.

Biographical Sketch

John Bottchen, Jr. was born on 5 April 1944 to John Bottchen, Sr., and Elva (Kinsley) Bottchen. The Bottchens also had one daughter, Barbara Kodner. Bottchen attended his first St. Louis Cardinals baseball game at about age 6 or 7 and began a lifelong devotion to his hometown team. His father taught both of his children how to keep score at the games. Bottchen kept score well enough to recreate each play of the game. However, a familiar story unfolded concerning childhood collections, as his mother discarded portions of his scorecard collection when the family moved.
