Historical Sketch

The Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States was a Civil War veterans organization founded in Philadelphia at the close of the war. The Missouri department of the Loyal Legion, known as the Commandery of the State of Missouri, was instituted in 1885. The members (or “companions” as they were known) of the Loyal Legion were commissioned officers and honorably discharged commissioned officers of the U.S. Army, Navy and Marine Corps, who served in the Civil War. Descendants of eligible officers were eligible for membership as hereditary companions.

Arrangement

The collection is arranged in four series. The Memorial Sketches Series consists of circulars issued by the commandery that solely contain memorial sketches of members. The series also contains some memorial cards. The series is arranged alphabetically. The Circulars Series contains circulars, some of which contain memorial sketches in addition to announcements. The series is arranged chronologically. The Record Books Series includes four disbound record books of the commandery that consist primarily of circulars, memorial cards, and announcements. (These four records books, arranged largely chronologically, were disbound for preservation reasons, and the items were retained in their original order.) The Correspondence Series is arranged chronologically.
