Scope and Contents

Collection contains the 136-page diary (1918-1919) of William Blue that describes his military service in France in World War I and his return to the United States. Collection also includes genealogy materials on the Blue and Mapp families, newspaper clippings regarding William Blue, and Blue’s appointment as assistant band leader in the 350th Field Artillery.

Biographical Sketch

William Blue, an African American bandmaster and composer, was born in Bloomfield, Missouri. He married Eva Mapp of Atlanta, Georgia, in 1898. They resided in Poplar Bluff, Missouri, before moving to St. Louis in the early twentieth century. During World War I he was regimental bandmaster of the 92nd Division and a member of the 350th Field Artillery. He died August 14, 1932, in St. Louis.
