Michael Brown, Jr. Collection

 Collection
Identifier: A3069

Scope and Contents

The collection is arranged chronologically and consists of three items relating to the death of Michael Brown and the subsequent social movement that developed in Ferguson, Missouri, in 2014. There is an Order of Service for Brown’s funeral held at the Friendly Temple Missionary Baptist Church on 25 August 2014. The Organization for Black Struggle issued a card with two messages. One message begins, “Justice for Mike Brown and his Family! OBS supports the demands of the Ferguson Community.” The other message is “Know Your Rights! What to do if you’re stopped by the police.”

The final item in the collection is a program for the Hands Up, Don’t Shoot art exhibition curated by the Alliance of Black Galleries from October to December 2014. Over 100 artists displayed works in 14 venues around the St. Louis community. The program lists the artists and venues, includes an introduction to the exhibition by the curator, Freida L. Wheaton, and provides photographs of select works, including portraits of Michael Brown.

Biographical Sketch

Michael Brown, Jr. was born on 20 May 1996 to Michael Brown, Sr., and Lesley McSpadden in St. Louis. He graduated from Normandy High School in May 2014 and planned to attend Vatterott College. On 9 August 2014, Brown was fatally shot by police officer Darren Wilson in Ferguson, Missouri. Brown was unarmed and a grand jury decided on 24 November 2014 not to indict Officer Wilson on any criminal charges.
