Historical Sketch

On 9 August 2014, a Ferguson, Missouri, police officer fatally shot an unarmed Michael Brown. The event sparked a reinvigorated movement focusing on issues of social justice that resonated throughout the region and nation and also attracted international attention.

In a ceremony at the Missouri History Museum on 18 November 2014, Governor Jay Nixon signed an executive order creating a sixteen-member Ferguson Commission. The Commission was given a September 2015 deadline to issue a report with policy recommendations in the following areas: citizen-law enforcement interaction and relation; racial and ethnic relations; municipal government organization and the municipal court system; and disparities in areas including education, economic opportunity, housing, transportation, health care, child care, business ownership, and family and community stability.

The Commission’s report, meeting transcripts, news stories, and research presentations related to its work can be found at StL Positive Change: The Ferguson Commission. The report is also available at the Forward Through Ferguson web site, the group that continues to work for the recommendations set forth by the Ferguson Commission.
