Cullinane Funeral Home Records

 Collection
Identifier: A3059

Scope and Contents

The collection contains funeral record books, account books, and a few files of pre-arranged funeral accounts spanning from 1886 to 1960. The records arranged alphabetically by type of document and chronologically within each type.

The funeral record books comprise the bulk of the collection and date from 1886 to 1916 with three gaps: 1890-1894, 1897-1899, and 1903-1905. Each page of the pre-printed funeral record books has the capacity to record all pertinent personal and financial information concerning a single funeral. The Cullinane books record only personal data, most often including: the name of the deceased, age, funeral date, place of death, certifying physician, cause of death, date of death, and cemetery lot number. The record books from 1900-1916 are volumes entitled The American Funeral Record: A Ready Reference Day Book for Undertakers. Six of the seven volumes have been dismantled for preservation.

The two account books date 1937-1945 and 1949-1960. Information recorded incudes date of payment, name of account, method of payment, and occasionally for what service Cullinane Funeral Home performed. In addition to funeral services, the firm rented its limousine for weddings and also provided ambulance service. Occasionally, ambulance runs are listed in the account books with a note about the date and time of service.

The daily planner is dated 1946 and records either services to be provided for each day, or those that were ordered on a given day. Most of the notes relate to the limousines, hearse, flower wagon, and ambulance.

Historical Sketch

Cullinane Brothers was founded in 1886 by Irish immigrant James Cullinane (1821-1891) to provide livery and undertaking services. The firm evolved in the 20th century and provided funeral services in the St. Louis community until 1960. James and his two sons, William (1858-1935) and Michael J. (1868-1949) worked together in the firm until James’ death in 1891. William’s three sons joined the family business: John P., James J., and William F. Cullinane. The last listing for the business in the 1960 St. Louis City Directory identifies John P. Cullinane as president and Jason J. Cullinane as vice president of the Cullinane Funeral Home.

Cullinane Brothers had several locations over its 74 year history. It was at 1710 North Grand Avenue for 33 years, from 1911 to 1944. The final location of the Cullinane Funeral Home was 3320 North Kingshighway Boulevard.
