Arrangement

The collection is arranged into three series: Events, Organizations, and Publications. The Events Series is divided in the following subseries: Arts, Personal Events, Political Events, Pride, and Social and Education Events. The Arts Subseries contains ephemera and promotional materials regarding film, music, and theater events in the St. Louis area. Most of the film material pertains to the St. Louis International Lesbian and Gay Film Festival at the Tivoli Theatre, 1992-1996, including programs, fliers, brochures, and a 1995 newsletter titled “The Liberated Screen.” Additional material includes fliers for screenings of the movies Wonderland and Apartment Zero, 1989-1990. Documented music events include 1997 programs and fliers for CHARIS – The St. Louis Women’s Chorus performances; The Gateway Men’s Chorus fliers, programs, and issues of “The Chorus Line” newsletters, 1993-1994; and concert tickets, fliers, and programs for performances of K.D. Lang, “The Women’s Showcase” at Cummel’s Café, and the Fabulous Flirtations. Theater events covered in the collection include 1996 performance fliers, programs, tickets, brochures, and “The Bottom Line” newsletter of the New Line Theatre; programs, fliers, and tickets for That Uppity Theatre Company performances, 1989 and 1994; and additional tickets, fliers, and playbills for performances at the Fox Theatre, St. Marcus Theatre, and St. John’s United Methodist Church in St. Louis. There is also one undated flier for a performance of “The Normal Heart” at Unity Temple on the Plaza in Kansas City. The Personal Events Subseries contains funeral programs for Dae Yun Han (1956-1991) and Gene P. Schultz (1943-1994) as well as wedding invitations, programs, and newspaper announcements for the unions of Carrie B. Clement and Amy Adams Squire, July 27, 1991; Tim Barrow and Tim Hedgecorth, November 13, 1993; Eric S. Affholter and Raymond E. Cruthis, September 11, 1993; Colleen Rae Gilmore and Loretta Kay Haggard, September 7, 1996; Mary A. Akers and Lorrie A. Jackson, June 21, 1997; Dayna Frances Deck and Susan Michele McIntosh, February 14, 2003; and Barbara Jean Gilchrist and Debra Knox Deiermann, September 9, 2006. The Political Events Subseries contains material regarding opposition to the failed 1994 Missouri Anti-Gay Amendment proposed by the Amendment Coalition with materials documenting the efforts of groups fighting the amendment, including Missourians for Freedom and Justice and Show Me Equality. The Missourians for Freedom and Justice material includes circular letters with calls to action, fundraising requests, and two issues of their newsletter, “With Liberty and Justice for All.” The Show Me Equality folder includes information on the second annual Missouri on the Move conference in Columbia, Mo, and other events. Additional material regarding the proposed amendment includes an issue of ACLU Liberties and a press release of the Amendment Coalition regarding their failure to gather enough petition signatures supporting the amendment. The subseries also includes material regarding the effort to re-elect Mayor Freeman Bosley in 1997 with information on his stance on gay rights, and material on miscellaneous St. Louis and Missouri political activities including a flier for a pro-choice rally at the World’s Fair Pavilion in Forest Park on the day of the Supreme Court decision on Webster v. Reproductive Health Services (July 3, 1989), postcards to Missouri Senators Danforth and Bond urging support for the Comprehensive AIDS Resource Emergency Act (1990), letter of State Representative Thomas P. Stoff to Michael Slawin regarding amendments to House Bill 1221, photocopy of letter of Bill Clinton to William Waybourn regarding gay rights, flier urging boycott of Library Ltd. Bookstore for inviting New Gingrich to speak (1995), flier regarding Laura A. Moore v. City of Vinita Park, and brochure to elect Democrat Bill Waggoner as 15th Ward Alderman, City of St. Louis. The Pride Subseries contains press releases, fliers, and program guides to Pride events in St. Louis and Kansas City (1988-2001) with newspaper clippings on the events from The Riverfront Times, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, The Lesbian and Gay News-Telegraph, and This Week in Greater St. Louis Magazine. The Social and Education Events Subseries contains fliers, brochures, and membership forms for various St. Louis clubs including social and special interest clubs Band Together, Family Tree, Gateway Alternative Lifestyles Social Club, Gay Married Men’s Association, Gay-tway Partners, and the Older Wiser Lesbian Society; sports clubs Frontrunners, St. Louis Gay and Lesbian Association of Summer Softball, and St. Louis Women’s Rugby; and support groups Open Doors, People Exchanging Power (PEP), The Steps Alano Club, and a group for LGBTQ Asians and Pacific Islanders. Other events documented include Gay and Lesbian History Month (1994-1997); concerts, dances, comedy, and theater performances sponsored by Wired Women; and miscellaneous events including art exhibit “The Rites of Spring,” April 23-May 7, 1988; flier for reading of proclamations of World AIDS Day on December 1, 1988; Forward Thinking Great Speakers Series, August 29, 1991; Lesbians in Positive Synch dance at the Casa Loma Ballroom, June 15, 1996; ice cream social “In the Park with Pride” at Tower Grove Park, June 23, 1996; and fliers for various parties, including a coming out party in honor of Ellen DeGeneres at Attitudes, 4100 Manchester, 1997. The Organizations Series is divided in the following subseries: Business, Community Groups, and Community Services. The Business Subseries contains material regarding LGBTQ-owned and LGBTQ-friendly businesses mostly in the St. Louis area. The bulk of the material is related to Our World Too Community Bookshop, 11 S. Vandeventer, including a December 1993 The Riverfront Times article on the bookstore, 5th and 10th anniversary fliers, an African American reading list, circular letters, membership application and membership card for O.W.T. Club Video, and newsletters, 1988-1996 (not a full run). Also included in the subseries is a list of feminist bookstores compiled by Womansplace Bookstore in Phoenix, AZ, which lists The Woman’s Eye in St. Louis; invitation to the opening of the Gay and Lesbian Center in San Francisco, 1995; fliers for the 2nd and 3rd annual St. Louis Lesbian and Gay Community Expo, 1996-1997; packet put together by the Universal Gay Resources Center, The Gay Chamber of Commerce, with newsletters and information on the organization; and miscellaneous material regarding The Renaissance Company (products catering to the LGBTQ community), the San Francisco Chronicle, CDS Group (domestic partnership insurance), attorney Kathryn J. Wysack (wills and power of attorney for the LGBTQ community), Not Just Copies Printing and Graphics (owned by Michael S. Slawin), Simply Beautiful (wedding and party rentals), and Doing Our Good (a community resale shop). The Community Groups Subseries contains ephemera and records of St. Louis LGBTQ nonprofit, charity, and activist groups. Records include fliers and invitations to AIDS Foundation of St. Louis events, including reading of Stephen King at The Library, Ltd. Bookstore to benefit the organization, and newsletter; brochures, fliers, invitations, list of demands, business card, event calendars, newsletters, and 1997 yearbook of The Center, 2256 S. Grand Blvd.; Challenge Metro newsletters, 1989 corporate report, holiday gala invitation, and fliers for “Break the Silence!”, March 8, 1994; Food Outreach “Food for Thought” newsletters and invitations to benefit events; brochures and fliers for the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) and the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Teachers Network (GLSTN); Human Rights Campaign Fund fliers, brochures, press releases, and material on 1993, 1994, and 1996 St. Louis benefit gala events; information on The Names Project St. Louis and viewings of the Names quilt in St. Louis (1988, 1991, and 1994), calls for volunteers and volunteer sign-up forms, fliers and programs for fundraising events, one issue of “A Stitch N’Time” newsletter, and car decals and stickers; brochure and press releases regarding the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, including information and meeting minutes regarding Missouri agenda; materials regarding Privacy Rights Education Project (PREP), including funeral program for Board of Directors member Tom Busekrus (1945-1990), event invitations and programs, brochure resource guide to the St. Louis Lesbian and Gay Community, meeting minutes, fliers, press releases, newsletters, fundraising material, letters to members, flier for dance to benefit PREP and The Center at the Hyatt Regency 25 years after Stonewall, voter guides for 1994 Missouri primary election and general election and 1996 Missouri general election, and newspaper clippings; Federation of Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays material including pamphlet titled “Read This Before Coming Out to Your Parents,” newsletters, financial statement, meeting information, newspaper clippings regarding controversy over being denied participation in Adopt a Highway program (1990), newsletters, invitations to open hours and Ellen DeGeneres’s coming out party, pamphlet titled “About Our Children” published by the national organization in multiple languages, brochure titled “Are You Abusing Your Child Without Knowing It?”, guide for parents published by New York City chapter titled “Can We Understand?”, information regarding Project Open Mind, information sheets with facts about homosexuality and parental acceptance, miscellaneous fliers and brochures, and blank stationery for St. Louis branch and national organization; St. Louis Acts Out meeting minutes, holiday flier, and statement of purpose; St. Louis Anti-Violence Project fliers, invitation to Straight from the Heart event, incident report form, and business card; St. Louis Effort for AIDS fliers to Fifties Auction benefit and list of lots, invitation to A Night of Major-League Baseball event at Busch Stadium to Help Strike Out AIDS, flier on the Comprehensive AIDS Resource Emergency Act, fundraising letter, and flier regarding “A Red Hot Affair” event; St. Louis Lesbian Agenda policy statement, Lavender Moon event calendars, and flier for Take Back the Night 10th anniversary march in Benton Park; St. Louis Log Cabin Republicans fliers, application for membership, meeting information, “Log Cabin News” newsletters, invitations to fundraisers, and flier promoting Andy Buhr for State Representative, 84th District; and miscellaneous items regarding Act Up St. Louis, the Lesbian Avengers, and Blacks Assisting Blacks Against AIDS. The Community Services Subseries contains fliers and brochures on domestic violence issues in the LBGTQ community; community health services information on Bethany Place, AIDS Hospice of Greater St. Louis, Vincent House, Our Little Haven, Southampton Healthcare, and St. Louis Women’s Heath Care Project; information on the St. Louis Gay and Lesbian History Workshop at Missouri Historical Society, November 11, 1993, and a defaced card from the archives card catalog; and fliers, programs, and newsletters from St. Louis religious organizations including Metropolitan Community Church of Greater St. Louis, An Ecumenical Group of Christian Churches of Greater St. Louis, the St. Louis Gay and Lesbian Chavurah, the World Congress of Gay and Lesbian Jewish Organizations, and Multicultural Ministries with Sexual Minorities. The Universities Subseries contains fliers and brochures for events and courses at St. Louis-area universities and colleges. The St. Louis Community College – Forest Park material includes a flier for Challenge Workshop (June 24, 1989), flier on new class titled “Lesbian and Gay Themes in Literature” in Spring 1998, and flier and brochure about the 4th Annual Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered Community Workshops, October 25, 1997. The University of Missouri-St. Louis material includes information on the Missouri Vision/Missouri Agenda meeting in Columbia, information regarding the St. Louis Lesbian and Gay Research Project, information on the 1995 Lavender Summit, and two fliers regarding the Institute for Women’s and Gender Studies. The Washington University material includes a flier supporting James Holobaugh, a gay man who was dismissed from the ROTC in 1990; flier for workshop on “Beyond Stereotypes: Understanding the Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Community” presented by The Gay and Lesbian Association of Student Social Workers and the George Warren Brown School of Social Work, March 22, 1992; fliers for Sex Week 1994 with list of lectures; and flier on the Women’s Studies Program. Also included is a flier for Outlook St. Louis volunteers regarding auditions and training at Webster University’s television studio and information about screenings of Absolutely Positive presented by The Webster University Film Series. The Publications Series includes photocopies of newspaper clippings and newsletters regarding the St. Louis LGBTQ community. The newspaper clippings from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Riverfront Times, The Lesbian and Gay News-Telegraph, This Week in Greater St. Louis Magazine, and Saint Louis Metro Voice discuss the Names Project quilt, discrimination and gay rights, the 1993 National March on Washington for Gay and Lesbian Rights, the effort to pass a Missouri anti-gay amendment, AIDS losses and caring for patients, physical assaults on the LGBTQ community, controversy about Rodney Wilson teaching LGBTQ history in Mehlville High School, South Grand businesses, Pride events, and gay marriage. The series also includes miscellaneous issues of newsletters from various organizations and zines, including “The Alternative Networker” published by Saint Louis Network, “Business Journal” published by UGRC Chamber of Commerce, “Dignity St. Louis”, “Ethical Weekly” published by The Ethical Society of St. Louis, “Gateway Alliance Newsletter” published by the Gateway Business and Professional Alliance, “The Lavender Dragon” published by Kindred Spirits, “Journal for Moving On” published by the Moving On Coalition, “PAWS Imprints” published by PAWS STL, “PACT St. Louis” published by People of All Colors Together, “Resist!” zine, “St. Louis Gender Foundation Gazette”, “Show Me Bears”, “Take Charge”, “Team St. Louis”, “Welcome Doorways”, “Whiz Bam!’s Lesbian Interest Supplement”, and “Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom” monthly bulletin. Most of the newsletters in the series are single issues.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The Saint Louis Gay and Lesbian Community Collection is a subject-based collection of mostly ephemera collected from multiple sources. The following individual donations have been identified: Michael S. Slawin donated theater programs, minutes, and press releases from various St. Louis-based political and social organizations, and material documenting his participation in gay rights and gay awareness activities in St. Louis. (93-0005 and 93-0086) Daniel C. Bailey donated two fliers from The Gay and Lesbian Association of Student Social Workers and the George Warren Brown School of Social Work Group at Washington University, March 22, 1992. (93-0017) Jeanette Hintz donated Challenge Metro newsletters, 1990-1991; wedding program of Carrie B. Clement and Amy Adams Squire at Trinity Episcopal Church, July 27, 1991; and additional fliers, newspaper clippings, and advertisements. (93-0072) Dina Young, former Missouri Historical Society archivist, donated additional materials, including St. Louis Log Cabin Republicans materials and programs and invitations to weddings of Mary A. Akers and Lorrie A. Jackson, June 21, 1997, and Colleen Rae Gilmore and Loretta Kay Haggard, September 7, 1996. Ian Darnell donated 2019 materials (2020-046) including: Human Rights Campaign Democratic Debate Watch Party items, chant sheets from a Rainbow Workers Alliance rally, and programs and flyers from the Eureka Springs Diversity Weekend.

Existence and Location of Copies

The St. Louis Gay and Lesbian Community Collection was digitized by Michio Kobayashi in 2022-2023 with funding from NEH as part of the Gateway to Pride grant. The images may be viewed online by clicking the links beside each item in the inventory.
