Scope and Contents

The Hand Family Papers consists primarily of the correspondence of Henry Hand, Jr., and family. The collection also includes two Bible records of the Hand family with dates and locations of births, deaths, and marriages; receipts between family members for money from estates; and Henry Hand, Jr.'s, copybook containing copies of his business correspondence, poems, and speeches.

Biographical Sketch

Henry Hand, Sr., settled in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri, in 1798 with his wife, two sons (William and John), and two daughters. William (circa 1783-1825) married Elizabeth Griffin (circa 1790-1814) on March 16, 1809, in the Louisiana Territory. They had two sons, Henry and Edward. Henry Hand, Jr., son of William and Elizabeth, was born in Smithland, Kentucky, on December 4, 1810. He married Felicia Bogard near Waidsboro, Kentucky, on January 1, 1837. He worked as a businessman in Smithland and Waidsboro, and held various public offices, including county clerk of Marshall County, Kentucky. In 1861, he moved to Randolph County, Arkansas, where he served as postmaster general. At the end of the Civil War he returned to Kentucky. He died August 24, 1883, in Paducah.
