Biographical Sketch

The Apollo Club was founded in 1893 by Lester Crawford shortly after the St. Louis Glee Club disbanded. It was a male chorus of sixty members. The object was to promote music and musical culture. They performed only at concerts given by the club and declined "all applications or invitations for the club to sing for charitable or other objects." The club disbanded in 1930. Alfred G. Robyn (1860-1935) was the conductor when the Club formed. Charles Wiggins was the president of the Apollo Club. He was also a member of the Missouri Historical Society for fifty-three years. He passed away on February 22, 1948. W.K. (William Kauffman) Stanard (1861-1934) was the vice-president of the Apollo Club. He was married to Mary Tillay. They had one son, Edwin T. Stanard, who was the president of the Standard-Tilton Milling Company until 1942. T.J Wright was the secretary and treasurer of the Apollo Club.
