French. According to news from Philadelphia, the English will attack the Illinois country; orders Delassus’ garrison to occupy the post at Ste. Genevieve, in case the English advance on St. Louis, as Ste. Genevieve is more important than New Madrid; if St. Louis should fall, he is to fall back to Nogales, an order known only to him; requests Pierre Derbigny, Delassus’ brother-in-law, come to New Orleans to be established as interpreter before Carondelet leaves for Quito; has recommended his brother to Mr. Howard for employ in the Illinois country; no news from Europe due to pirates disrupting communications with Havana and he has purchased and armed a ship in order to give chase; regrets being unable to help Mr. Tardiveau; Pierre Delassus should soon receive his appointment as commander.
