- John Dougherty Papers | Letter signed Tho. Swords, New York, to Major Jno. Dougherty. I am under orders for California and expect to start as soon as my accounts are settled at the Treasury. Received some deeds to be signed from administrator of Shultz’s estate. He also suggests a division of the property and I am inclined to agree rather than have him file suit which will be an expense to all concerned. The Kansas-Nebraska Act is a just one and it is too bad that it could not have been carried out in the right spirit. Individuals mentioned: Bayless, Mr. Steele, Mrs. S., Mrs. D., Sumner, J.M.G. Browne, and N.J. Alexander. Places mentioned: Fort Leavenworth, California, Iatan, and Missouri., 1856 June 25
