Left Camp Benton after his last letter in September and arrived last Saturday; tells of the beauty of the land and the toll taken on the population of the city; one cannot imagine the hardships of war until the destruction and stealing done by both sides against the citizens of the region is observed; reports there about 21,000 troops and expecting Gen. Pope and Gen. Hunter to increase the number to 32,000; scouts report that the enemy is 40,000 to 60, 000 strong and are encamped at Wilson’s Creek, about 9 miles away; expects the battle to start tonight or tomorrow morning., 1861 Nov 3
