- Hamilton Rowan Gamble Papers | Letter signed John B. Gray, Adj. Genl., St. Louis, to Gov. Gamble. I joined with Genl. Totten and Col. Wood in a dispatch to you recommending Maj. Green for vacancy upon your staff caused by the resignation as ADC of Col. Wood. Since then Col. C.P.E. Johnson, Paymaster Genl., has intimated to me that he would be pleased to receive the appointment. It is my impression that Col. Johnson has prior and more just claims than Major Green, so unless you have decided to make the appointment as requested I would prefer to recommend Col. Johnson for the place. I am grieved to learn of your accident. Individuals mentioned include Genl. Totten, Col. Wood, Col. C.P.E. Johnson. (2 pages), 1863 Dec 18
