Hall arrived about a week after left and business has been rapidly dispatched. Maj. Greeley will not pay the vouchers of my clerks except upon your approval. I am sending them to you for signatures. Discussion of Genl. Schofield’s G/O No. 75 [enclosed]. It will create dissatisfaction and bad blood. Curtis, with all his faults, is too shrewd to have done any such thing. Gov. Gamble left yesterday for Illinois and is instructed to go to Indiana and Ohio and perhaps to Iowa upon his return. Col. Easton goes upon Monday next to Kansas. Enclosing abstract showing number of men enlisted in U.S. Vols. and M.S.M. as taken from the muster-in-rolls only. Gov. Hall has revoked your instructions regarding payment of field and staff officers of the brigades and regiments, and has instructed Col. Sawyer to make out and pay his payroll as Brig. Genl. Sawyer is excessively nervous this morning. Two paymasters have gone to the northwest district and one to the southwest. Individuals mentioned include Mrs. Gamble, Gov. Willard P. Hall, Maj.
