- Hamilton Rowan Gamble Papers | Letter signed Barton Bates, Jefferson, to Gov. Gamble. Quotes a letter just received from his father, Edward Bates, in which Bates says that now is the time for Gamble to exert his greatest energy. “Besides excessive hard work lately, I have had some pretty hard quarreling. I had to speak with the downright boldness of accusation to the Sec. of War and to the Genl.-in-chief.” Charged them with listening to rumors against Gov. Gamble and thinks since then their tone and feelings have changed. Places mentioned include Missouri. (3 pages), 1863 Jan 21
