- Hamilton Rowan Gamble Papers | Letter signed Tho. L. Crawford, Brig. Genl. Enrolled Missouri Militia, Memphis, Tenn., to Gov. H.R. Gamble, Jefferson City. I am detained here a few days settling my cotton speculations. I wrote Col. Wood of my absence. Genl. Grant has massed his whole army at this point and vicinity, preparatory to another grand expedition down the river and against Vicksburg, having evacuated Holly Springs and the whole of northern Mississippi. One division [McPherson’s] has already embarked. Whether or not it will be successful remains to be seen, and is questionable in the minds of those who are best informed, and who were present at the last engagement. Individuals mentioned include Col. William D. Wood, Genl. Ulysses Grant, Maj. Genl. James Birdseye McPherson. Places mentioned include Holly Springs, Northern Mississippi, Vicksburg.
