- Hamilton Rowan Gamble Papers | Letter signed C. Gibson, Washington, to My Dear Uncle [Gov. Gamble]. I called upon Judge Blair, & after stating the case of Dr. Bernays to him, I requested him to see that he got his commission. His reply was that he did not speak to Stanton on business. He then gave the reasons why he thought Mr. Stanton was a corrupt man, and said he would not be surprised to hear that he was in the pay of Jeff Davis. Henderson told me that the commission was ordered by the President in his presence and held up by the secretary of war. Individuals mentioned include Judge Blair, Dr. Bernays, Mr. Stanton, Jeff Davis, Henderson, Emerson Etheridge, Forney. (3 pages), 1863 Jan 6
