- Hamilton Rowan Gamble Papers | Letter of [H.R. Gamble], St. Louis, to Major General Halleck. Was surprised at the contents of his letter of the 27th of September. This was occasioned by the “utter irrelevancy” of the answer with the President concerning the body of troops raised by him [Gamble] and arrives at the conclusion that they can only be considered state troops. Halleck’s letter announcing that his [Gamble’s] order discharging Col. Jackson from the service of the United States was without authority is untrue, for Jackson was in the service of the state. Cites instances where he has removed officers and accepted resignations. Individuals mentioned include Gen. McClellan, Col. Jackson. Places mentioned include Washington, Missouri.
