- Hamilton Rowan Gamble Papers | Letter of [Copy] [Gov. Gamble] St. Louis, to Major Gen. Halleck. Was surprised at the contents of his letter of the 27th of September. This was occasioned by the “utter irrelevancy” of the answer to the question involved. Interpretates the agreement entered into with the President concerning the body of troops raised by him [Gamble] and arrives at the conclusion that they can only be considered state troops. Halleck’s letter announcing that his [Gamble’s] order discharging Col. Jackson from the service of the United States was without authority is untrue, for Jackson was in the service of the state. Cities instances where he has removed officers and accepted resignations. Individuals mentioned include Gen. McClellan, Col. Jackson. Places mentioned include Washington, Missouri.
