- Hamilton Rowan Gamble Papers | Letter signed H.R. Gamble, St. Louis, to Abraham Lincoln, President of the United States. Several citizens of border countries of this state will forward to you their representation of the affairs in adjoining portions of Kansas and their apprehension of invasion. I owe it to you Mr. President [from whom I have received nothing but kindness] to say that if such invasion is made, I will resist it with all the force I can command. I appeal to you to save me from the necessity of diverting a portion of my force from [its] necessary object to the slaying of negro invaders and their associates. Places mentioned include Kansas and Missouri. (2 items) (Contemporary copies), 1862 Sept 8
