- Hamilton Rowan Gamble Papers | Two items included: Letter signed DeKalb, Missouri, to Mr. Gamble. We need a change of generals in this upper country. The union men don’t want him and I give you Judge S. Woodson, St. Joseph; Henry Vorez, Judge Henry Tutt, James Moss, Clay Gamer of Ray [County] as proof. B.F. Loan says you are not fit to have anything to do in this state. Your last orders won’t be obeyed by him. He says “damn the constitution” and you with it. He and his Kansas friends intend to have a military governor appointed in Missouri, and has sent word to Washington to have you removed. This is done secretly so I cannot sign my name; Document signed H.R. Gamble [on reverse]. Sent for perusal of Lieutenant Governor Hall with the suggestion that it cannot be possible that General Loan would expose himself to be stricken from the rolls for the insubordinate language imputed to him.
