- Hamilton Rowan Gamble Papers | Letter from St. Louis, to Honorable Salmon P. Chase, Secretary of Treasury. [Incomplete] I have received your letter of 20th November in which you inform me that $250,000 was placed in the hands of Carlos S. Greely, disbursing agent out of the appropriation of the 31st July last, for the protection of loyal citizens against domestic violence, insurrection, invasion or rebellion. You seem to think this will be enough. Refer to a map of the state, running your eye along the line of the Pacific Railroad from St. Louis past Jefferson City, the terminus of the road at Sedalia, and then you will understand [the sum is insufficient]. Individuals mentioned include Carlos S. Greeley and Pacific Railroad. Places mentioned include Jefferson City, Sedalia and St. Louis. [In hand of H.R. Gamble] (1 page), 1861 Dec 16
