- Hamilton Rowan Gamble Papers | Letter signed H.R. Gamble, Jefferson City, to Charles Gibson, Washington. Upon delivering President’s letter to General Fremont I made explanations on all points upon which I understood he took exceptions to my course. He mentioned the first point and I referred to all others that I know. He was almost entirely a silent listener. At the conclusion he appeared to be satisfied to forget the matters explained. I afterwards had an interview with one of his staff at his request and was urged by this officer to see General Fremont again. An hour was designated. I attended, waited a half hour and more, was unable to get an audience and left. I have not seen him since. Full statement by mail. I expect no arms from him. Individuals mentioned include President Lincoln and John C. Fremont. (1 page), 1861 Sept 19
