- Hamilton Rowan Gamble Papers | Letter signed John M. Richardson, Rolla, Missouri, to Governor H.R. Gamble. Speaks of distressing condition of the people of Southwest Missouri. Loyal men are being constantly run from their homes. Has found no order for Colonel Stevenson to march. The rebels have advanced their camp to Wilson’s Creek, ten miles from Springfield. “I have great fears General Lyon will have to retreat before re-enforcements can reach him.” Repeats his statement of the condition in the southwest Missouri and thinks it will go hard if the rebels are permitted to crush out Union sentiment on the eve of an important election. Individuals mentioned include General John C. Fremont, Colonel D. Stevenson, Colonel John B. Wyman and General Nathaniel Lyon. Places mentioned include Rolla, Springfield, St. Louis and Wilson’s Creek. (2 pages and envelope), 1861 Aug 10
