- Hamilton Rowan Gamble Papers | Letter signed Isaac H. Sturgeon, St. Louis, to Governor H.R. Gamble. Suggesting that you appoint Major J. McKinstry a Brigadier General in the militia of Missouri and tender his services to the general government through Colonel Fremont. General Gremont will accept and order Major McKinstry mustered into the serves of the United States. Major McKinstry said he will accept no compensation from the state. It will come from the United States. If you think favorably of the matter permit me to suggest that you send a messenger with a note to him at his quarters on the corner of 4th and Washington Avenue, the lot on which Colonel Brant’s old residence stood, asking him to call.
