- Hamilton Rowan Gamble Papers | Letter signed D.K. Pitman, Cottleville, [Missouri], to H.R. Gamble, Governor of Missouri. Discussion of the insulting “home guards” in Cottleville, and I fear a collision between the encampment and the citizens. The encampment is under the command of Colonel A. Krekel and number between 500 and 1000 men. Can they, by law, authority or right, be disbanded and their arms taken from them? I know they are not armed or organized by the state of Missouri and I know of no law of the United States for thus arming. Your sister is slowly declining both in health and mind. She cannot last much longer. Individuals mentioned include Colonel A. Krekel and Missouri “Home Guards.” (4 pages and envelope), 1861 Aug 5
