- Hamilton Rowan Gamble Papers | Letter signed Edward Bates, Washington, to C. Gibson, Atlantic City. Save in regard to Governor Gamble: “I believe that his appointment more than that of any other man, will tend to restore intern tranquility.” Has been sick for the last three days, but feels better this morning. Says they cannot afford to quarrel and must have harmony between the state and federal governments. Referring to the Missouri Militia expresses the belief that no more can be done than home protection within the respective counties. “The state has now no money and no credit and cannot bear the expense of an army.” Individuals mentioned include Governor Gamble, Van Allen, Jackson and President.
