- Hamilton Rowan Gamble Papers | Letter signed C.D. Drake, St. Louis, to Honorable H.R. Gamble, Jefferson City. Calling to your attention the importance of the immediate organization of the Unionists throughout the state in a military form for self-protection. I am not at all acquainted with the militia law of 1859, but suppose it affords the basis for such an organization, but think any movement toward such an organization should have an official sanction. My suggestion is that you should in your forthcoming proclamation call upon the friends of the Union throughout the state to organize companies and that the general government should furnish the necessary arms and ammunition. It is time that the traitors in this state should be made to feel that the Unionists are ready and willing to protect themselves. (3 pages), 1861 Aug 3
