- Hamilton Rowan Gamble Papers | Letter signed Major General H.W. Halleck, Headquarters, Department of the Missouri, to Governor [Hamilton R. Gamble]. I am informed that officers of the militia, and especially of your “Guard” have visited various bodies of “Reserve Crops,” “Home Guards,” etc., mustered into the United States service, and endeavored to induce the men to enlist into the State Militia. This is not only improper, but producing very injurious effects. Men cannot be transferred from the Volunteers to the Militia, and they ought not to be tampered with. I shall disband these irregular organizations as soon as the public service will permit, and then the men can join the Militia. I trust you will take measures to prevent a repetition of the offense, which by law is a serious one, although I do not suppose anything improper was intended. (2 pages), 1861 June 2
